“The quality of care you provide reflects not just skill, but heart. Your dedication makes a meaningful difference every single day.” -Lauren, Carrie’s Manager
Share a little about yourself: My husband, James, and I just celebrated our ten-year
anniversary in August, with a trip to Jamaica. We try to travel somewhere once a year.
Together we have seven kids: six girls and one boy. We also have six grandkids: two
girls and four boys.
What is your favorite hobby or activity? I love going camping and fishing. We camp
near Angola, Indiana, and I will fish anywhere and anytime I can go. I prefer lake fishing
over river fishing, and my favorite fish to catch is lake perch because they really like to
fight you. Once, I fished in Key West on the Gulf Coast, and this fish kept getting my
bait. I just couldn’t bring it in. Another young woman—she was maybe sixteen—caught
the fish because she had a stronger line. I learned that my line wasn’t strong enough to
catch this fish. It turned out to be a nurse shark that was about 2 ½ feet long.

What drew you to the role of a caregiver? I had been working in factories and found I
was spending almost as much time out of work as I was at work. I decided I wanted to
find something that wasn’t as physical. Both my mother and grandmother have
dementia, and I had taken on a caregiver role with them. When I saw an ad for a
caregiver, I thought I’d try it. And now, I’ve been doing this job for nearly a year.
What is your favorite part of the job? Getting to know the clients and hearing their
stories.

What do you like about working for Firefly? They communicate with their caregivers
regularly. I appreciate them checking in with me to be sure I like the job and asking if I
have questions. You can tell they really care about their employees.
Share a little about your clients: I have one full-time client. He calls me his daughter.
We have coffee together, then I get him his milk, medicine, and a protein shake, and we
talk about the night before or what is going on in the news.
You and your husband enjoy traveling. Where are you going next? We are going
down near Biloxi, Mississippi. We think we might like to retire there someday.
We spoke with Roger, a client of Carrie’s, and his wife, Sharon, and they had
lovely things to say about her. Roger said, “On a scale of one to ten, I’d rate her a
twelve. She helps me with my hair and beard in the morning, assists with a shower, and
makes my bed. She fixes meals for me and helps to clean the house. I’m a retired
master chef and soup is one of my specialties. I came up with a recipe like Olive
Garden’s pasta e fagioli and she helps me make it.
