Meet Caregiver Becki G.

Becki G. is a nearly eight-year Firefly caregiver. She has a client, Norman, that she began seeing when she first started working for Firefly, and she is still his caregiver today. When we spoke with Norman, he talked about how blessed he is to have a friend like Becki. He said that they talk, and she really listens to him. It gives us great pleasure to announce Becki as the May Caregiver of the Month—and she’s a repeat winner! We would like to congratulate Becki for her hard work and dedication to improving the lives of her clients. We hope you enjoy learning a little about her.

Tell us a little about you Becki: I grew up as the daughter of a pastor and we lived all
over Michigan. I went to school at Bethel for a while and then completed my
undergraduate degree at Liberty University. I went to graduate school and completed
my master’s at Indiana Wesleyan. I have three sons, nine grandchildren, two great-
grandchildren and a significant other named Jim. Most of my family live in this area
except for one son, and his family, who live in Dallas. Having most of my family close by
gives me a lot of time to spend with family. I attend Adamsville Road Church of God
where I’m a member of the worship team and I facilitate a grief share program there.

You have been with Firefly for a long time. What is it like working for them?
What
keeps me at Firefly is the flexibility. I started working for them twenty-hours and week
and now I work about fourteen-hours, which is the number of hours I want to work. The
owners are also kind. They know the names of all of their employees and treat us as if
we are their friends. Whenever we get together, it’s like we are all family.

Building beautiful friendships.

Can you tell us what you do for one of your clients?
I’ve been with one client, Norman,
since the beginning—almost eight years now. He lives alone, so for the first 30 to 45
minutes, we talk. I’ll get him water or anything else that he wants or needs, then I’ll
begin doing laundry and clean up the house.

Have you received any good advice from a client?
Yes! I was thinking about getting a
different car and I asked for a client’s advice on if I should trade my current “big” car in
for a smaller car. The client said to keep the big car because it is safer. So far, I’ve kept
the bigger car.

What do you enjoy doing when you aren’t working? I have copious flower gardens and
I love to swim. I have a pool and the grandchildren come over and we have a ball. I enjoy
reading—mostly fiction, but I’ve recently discovered non-fiction. I enjoy the historical
books by Bill O’Reilly.

Helping our clients maintain their homes.

Norman is a long-term client of Becki’s. He had amazing things to say about her: Becki has become part of the family over the years. She knows my kids, grand-kids, and great-grandkids. She has a degree in psychology, which is a great field for her—she’s a skilled listener. She gives me a chance to talk to someone who understands me. We have some pretty good discussions about things while I have my coffee. Then she gets to work and does a wonderful job. She knows where all my stuff is, specifically where my laundry goes. She even puts it away for me in the right place. I’m fortunate…very blessed to have a friend like Becki. She’s dedicated to doing what she does around the house and goes above and beyond what Firefly and her clients expect from her.
